Spending time together is essential if you want to build a strong relationship as a family. And there is no better way than to start with consistent family meals.
For years, in my family, we have dedicated one day of the week to set aside for family meals. This has given us a chance to spend quality time with one another. We are able to sit down and hear how everything has been going on in each others week. It lets us keep each other updated and feel supported along the way.
One rule that we have added recently, is that everyone has to leave their phones in the middle of the table. Nobody can touch or go on their cell phones at all from the time we sit down till the time everyone stands up. If someone does break this rule then they either pay for the meal (restaurant) or clean all the dishes (home). This makes it more interesting and everyone is more likely to converse with one another. It shows that you are engaged and listening to the other family members’ conversation (instead of being on your phone).
Want to bring back family meals?

What I found to work for my family, is that we all pick a day ahead of time. We do this so that there is a day planned that each person agrees on and can definitely be there! Also, if the “basic” dinner meal doesn’t work for you all, maybe set aside a breakfast or lunch meal…maybe even a brunch.
If you happen to have extended family (grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, etc.) that live nearby or can make it, then don’t be afraid to invite them too.
Family Meal Out (Restaurant)
Each person can have a week set to them where they are able to pick the restaurant that they want the family to eat at together. This makes sure that the food and setting are different each time. Along with not being left the dirty dishes and a messy kitchen each week.

Family Meal In (Home)
This is the more affordable option, I mean I know how expensive food can get… I am a college student (that’s a lot of what I spend my money on). If your extended family lives nearby, you can each set out a week for your close family to host everyone else. This takes the pressure off of just one close family and provides a different setting. If you and your close family are the only ones that live in your area then have a week set for each person to pick the recipe for the meal.

Cook together
Another idea is to set aside some days where the family can come an hour early and you all can make the meal together. This gives a different bonding experience as well as teaching the kids cooking matters. I have noticed this to be a lot of fun…and I have gained some new cooking recipes and hints from this too!

I absolutely loving family meal time!! 🙂
It is always a time that I look forward to in order to catch up with what is going on and get a delicious meal in 😉
Does your family do meals altogether often? When you do get together, what’s your favorite way to eat a family meal?

Thanks so much for reading Elizabeth!
Yes! My husband and I have been doing this since we started dating and we plan to teach our toddler as soon as he can comprehend a little better. We looooove cooking at home, but going out is also great for those days where you need a break!
This is so good to hear Karla, thanks for the comment! I agree going out is great when you need a break… & have fun with your little one, enjoy it, time flies!
Wow! This post got me thinking! I make a habit of having dinner each night with my husband and kids, but now I need to have a night to include both of our parents and siblings. This will definitely keep us closer and up to date in each of our busy lives, rather than waiting for the next holiday or birthday celebration. Thank you for these tips!
Yasssss Yolanda! I am so happy you read this post and it got you thinking. I hope you put it to use and enjoy your new family meal plans with your extended family. Thanks for reading and the comment!(:
We never did family meals, since we were always fun. My first memory is actually sitting on my Dad’s lap, watching him play Legend of Zelda on the old NES.
Sounds like a good first memory, what a time!
