How To Use Your Senses To Be Mindful

We are constantly using our senses. Whether that’s touching our phones or steering wheel or smelling the food in the oven. It even includes seeing the sun rise and set every day, listening to music and tasting each meal.

But, how often are you using your senses to be mindful and really paying close attention to all of this? These are tasks that you do on a daily basis. When is it that you find yourself appreciating each little detail of the senses that you have? And using your senses more accordingly to live in the moment?

Using Your Senses Allows You To Be Mindful

Mindfulness is being aware. It’s about the here and now. If you want to be mindful, you can’t allow your mind to get stuck on regrets or start to worry about what might happen later. This tends to become more difficult as we age because we gather more thoughts over time.

Tasting

If you’re anything like me you absolutely love food and no matter how much you have tried the same food you will still eat it. So, why not keep enjoying the food even though you have eaten it hundreds of times (like pizza)!? The point of being mindful eating is being present with your food and the way you eat it. Try and focus on the taste of the food, focus on all the textures and flavors. Doing this will help you slow down and be more grateful for your food, savoring every bite.

Seeing

Sight is another sense that we use all the time without even thinking about it. So many of us are seen walking around town with our heads in our phones or blankly staring. Look up at your surroundings, you will see the same sky that every other person on this Earth see’s (pretty cool, right)?

I can remember a time that I was so caught up in my phone (distractor) that I missed a man propose to his lady. Wow ): I missed such a beautiful moment over a silly text message that could’ve waited.

Hearing

Listen, we as humans have selective attention. We only really tune in to what we want to hear.  Take a moment to close your eyes. Allow yourself to take in every sound that you hear, the timer going off, your neighbor’s lawn mower, or the little children playing. Maybe it’s just the air vent or footsteps. Do you notice that your attention goes to the sounds in the background that you previously didn’t notice?

Use your sense of hearing as a way to be mindful each day. I suggest really listening to what people have to say as well as lsitening to the background sound. They are both important when trying to live more in the moment.

Touching

Take a moment and realize what you are touching right now. Your feet on the ground or a leg rest, your bottom pressed firmly on a chair with your back laid against it, your hands on your lap, whatever it may be. We don’t pay attention to little things like this, but it is important to take your mind off all the crazy stuff going on in life and become aware and really tune into what we are physically feeling.

Smelling

Stop and smell the roses, breathe in that hot cocoa on a winter morning, and that high-tide might smell bad but hey.. at least you can smell something! Smell your food before you eat it..(it’s almost like a tease), but helps you enjoy it more!

Many of us have the ability to smell but rarely find ourselves stopping to smell the environment that we are in at that time.

Focus on your body, love it, use it to its best potential.

Live In The Moment

These are just a few ways that using your senses with intention and thought can help you be mindful. Setting your attention to your surroundings in the here and now will keep you living in the present.
