We’ve all heard the old adage – live your best life! But you may be wondering how to do that when we’ve just made our way through a global pandemic, energy prices are rising and that dreamy holiday you’re craving is looking further and further out of reach.
Not to panic. With the right plan and some hot travel tips, you can visit popular destinations on a budget. Below we’ll give you our top five tips for how to enjoy a holiday to Spain on a budget. It may sound obvious, but life is about making memories and experiencing the world. Having to do so on a budget should not hold you back – all you need is the right plan. Ready? Let’s go!
1. Pick a cheaper time of year
At the height of the summer season, Spain can be pricey. Picking a time of year that is less popular can seriously save you some cash. This means skipping the months when big cultural events happen, like Semana Santa, and the peak school holidays. Instead, pack a jacket and head to Spain in spring and autumn instead – there’s still plenty to see and do, and temperatures are generally mild.

2. Save with a package holiday
Not all package holidays are made equal, but some will help with your budget planning – especially if you have a tendency to overspend on food and drink when you go out. Additionally, some airlines offer for children to travel for free, while some hotels will give you free childcare or upgrades. They can also mean that you pay off your holiday over a period of several months with your travel agent, rather than having to have all the cash in hand when you travel, which can be handy if you’re likely to spend your savings before you head off.
3. Buy food on a budget

Spain is world-renowned for its delicious local food. Tapas or pinchos are available almost everywhere, and you can easily order several in a less touristy area for around €5 per plate and share them with your travel companions. If you’re looking for cheap drinks to enjoy after a long day exploring, local neighborhoods rather than tourist potshots are the way to go.
4. Use public transport
Public transport such as buses and metros can be incredibly cheap, especially if you’re visiting Northern Spain – expect to pay around 70 cents for a single bus or tram ride. You might also save some extra money by purchasing travel multipacks, which will give you discounted tickets to use the city’s public transport. Avoid using taxis or relying on rental cars, and you’ll certainly be saving a lot of cash.

5. Sight-see… for free!
If you think everything worth seeing has to cost a fortune, think again. Most beaches will be free to visit; if you’ve overdone your tan for a day and would rather be indoors, you’ll also find free museums and art galleries. Guided tours can also be heavily discounted depending on the week or month of the year, and you can always find budget-friendly unusual activities which will make your journey a unique experience.
